Why You'll Love This Curd Rice Recipe
Curd Rice, also known as Thayir Sadam in Tamil Nadu, is one of South India's most comforting dishes. Made with soft cooked rice, fresh yogurt, and a fragrant tempering of spices, it offers a perfect balance of creamy, tangy, and mildly spiced flavors.
Whether served as a cooling lunch, light dinner, or alongside spicy curries, curd rice is satisfying, nutritious, and incredibly easy to prepare. It's especially popular during warm weather because of its refreshing taste.

- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon chana dal

- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 8 to 10 fresh curry leaves
- 1 dried red chili (optional)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
- 2 tablespoons grated carrot (optional)
- 1 tablespoon pomegranate seeds for garnish (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Rice

2. Add the Yogurt
Mix the yogurt into the cooled rice until creamy. Season with salt and stir well.
3. Make the Tempering
Heat the oil or ghee in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the urad dal, chana dal, dried red chili, green chili, grated ginger, curry leaves, and asafoetida. Cook until the dals become lightly golden.
4. Combine Everything
Pour the hot tempering over the yogurt rice. Mix gently until evenly combined.
5. Garnish and Serve
Fold in the chopped coriander and grated carrot if using. Garnish with pomegranate seeds and serve immediately or slightly chilled.
Expert Tips
Always allow the rice to cool before adding yogurt to prevent it from curdling. Adding a little milk keeps the curd rice soft even after refrigeration. Use fresh homemade yogurt for the best flavor and creaminess.
Storage
Store leftover curd rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. If it becomes too thick, stir in a little milk or fresh yogurt before serving.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with mango pickle, lime pickle, roasted papad, potato fry, vegetable poriyal, fried chilies, or crispy appalam for a traditional South Indian meal.
Recipe Variations
Add finely chopped cucumber for extra freshness, mix in grated beetroot for color, include chopped grapes or raisins for sweetness, stir in fresh cream for extra richness, or use brown rice for a healthier version.
